Civitavecchia port call: how to visit Rome by train on your own
Ship excursions to Rome often cost €80–€120 per person. With the BIRG regional train ticket, you can reach and explore Rome for under €15.

Civitavecchia is the cruise gateway to Rome. While Rome sits roughly 75 km inland, direct and frequent trains make independent visits easy and budget-friendly.
1. From the pier to Civitavecchia station
Take the free port shuttle bus to Largo della Pace. From there, it is a 15–20 minute walk to the train station, or a quick local bus ride (€3).
2. The smart ticket: BIRG (Integrated Regional Ticket)
At around €12, the BIRG ticket covers the return regional train journey (FL5 line) plus unlimited Rome metro, bus and tram travel for the day. Always stamp it in the green machines before boarding.
3. Where to get off
- Roma San Pietro (45–50 mins): closest stop for St. Peter's Basilica and the Vatican
- Roma Termini (70 mins): central station, convenient for walking to the Colosseum, Trevi Fountain and Pantheon
4. The golden rule: safe return margin
Plan to catch your return train from Rome at least 2.5 hours before the ship's official "all aboard" time. Italian regional trains can occasionally face delays.
